Check your parameters. If any of them are off, it is possible that there is an excess of debris. I assume that your clarifier works by clumping debris, making it easier for the filter to trap them. Hope this helps!

I'd go ahead and buy them. Just make sure that you run them on some plain water for awhile to make sure that you aren't bringing any parasites or diseases into your tank. See if you can get him to also give you any unused filter media, as you will eventually need it and I doubt he will.

if you know any good schooling fish id like to know :P

one of my favs are tiger barbs

Minnows, Tetras, Rasboras, Cory Catfish, and many others are all good schooling fish.
